Description

Steel Hopper (Rainwater Head) – Ø90, RAL 7016, RAL 9005 & Aluzinc

A hopper is an open collecting box fitted at the head of a downpipe. Water discharges into it from above – from a flat or enclosed roof outlet, a parapet chute, a valley, or a second gutter run – and leaves through the outlet into the Ø90 pipe below.

Its job is capacity. An enclosed roof area has nowhere to shed water if the outlet cannot take the flow fast enough, and standing water on a flat roof is both a loading problem and a leak risk. The hopper’s open mouth accepts a much greater surge than a pipe entry alone, so sudden heavy rain is taken away rather than backing up on the roof.

It is also the practical answer wherever water has to be collected from a point that is not a conventional eaves gutter. Where a chute comes through a parapet, where a short upper run discharges onto a lower roof, or where two flows need to meet before entering one pipe, the hopper gathers them in one place and sends them down a single run. From there the water can go to a drain, a soakaway or a rainwater tank.

At 240 mm wide and 200 mm tall it is a visible component, so the open box form is usually treated as a deliberate detail on the elevation rather than something to hide. It is part of the 130/90 system and finished to match the gutter, downpipe and fittings in that range.

What this hopper works with

This hopper discharges into Ø90 downpipe as part of the 130/90 system. A complete run generally needs:

  • Ø90 downpipe, 3 m – to carry water from the hopper down the wall
  • Ø90 downpipe connectors – one at each joint between pipe lengths
  • Ø90 downpipe brackets – to fix the pipe to the wall, with one close below the hopper to carry the load
  • Ø90 elbows – where the run has to step around an obstacle or back to the wall face
  • Ø90 spout – to finish the run above ground and throw water clear of the wall
  • Ø90 rainwater catcher – where the water is being diverted into a butt
  • Ø130 gutter and fittings – where the hopper collects from a gutter run above

How many do you need?

One hopper per collection point – typically one for each flat roof outlet, parapet chute or upper run discharging into a lower system. Fit a bracket close beneath it: a hopper full of water is heavy, and the load sits at the top of the pipe run. Send us details of the roof and where the water is coming from and we will advise on what the run needs.
